Is there anyone who would be willing to beta read a Jack/Sawyer slash story, NC-17, 2782 words, in the present tense, set in S1 before episode 8? I've been polishing it neurotically for a ridiculous length of time, so it doesn't, I hope, need a lot of work, and it shouldn't be a major investment of time. Mostly I think it just needs a check by fresh eyes, particularly for Britishisms, which I have tried to avoid. I have never posted any fic before, and have read the instructions for doing that, and found them a bit intimidating, so help with that would also be greatly appreciated.

If you would like to ask any questions first, please feel free. You can comment here, or contact me at alexandra356@yahoo.co.uk

Thanks in advance,

Alexandra

Well, damn…I mean oops. I really didn’t mean to start out this discussion with a religious theme, so we’ll say this isn’t one because there are so many other interpretations. But I chose Water as my symbol for this first article of my new Symbolism on Lost series, simply because it has so much depth and breadth as a symbol. I believe it symbolizes baptism, but not baptism into any church. By “spiritual” I don’t mean God, necessarily. I mean baptism into new lives. Sometimes it’s slow and someone needs more than one take; sometimes it works on the first try; sometimes it works very slowly. I’ll give you as many examples as I can, then I’d like for you to give me your own, or discuss mine, or you can argue with me if you want.

I purposely left out many of the water symbols and things associated with water (hint: the Lighthouse). See what you can come up with. I forgot Aaron’s baptism until just now, which was a big one, but see what other blanks you can fill in. You can get as goofy as you want (i.e., the ice Kate rhapsodized over in Mikhail’s cabin). Or you can get really philosophical and wonder at the lack of water at the church – we didn’t see a baptismal font or pool, there was no holy water at the door…but does it matter? Haven’t they all had their “trial by water” already?

“There is no now, here.” – Christian

Following The Incident, there were many fics around dealing with the possibility that the reset had worked and Flight 815 had never crashed. And in LA X, it initially looked like that was what we were getting. But it didn’t take long before the changes in the timeline became apparent, leaving people wondering what the sideways verse was really, before the revelation in The End that met with, shall we say a mixed reception.

But whether you love it or you hate it, let’s talk sideways verse!

I love how one simple image or word can conjure up such differing ideas for people; how one thing can branch out into so many different scenarios for different people.

This is a chance to see what works for your inspiration, is it visual, oral, auditory? This isn’t a fic challenge – you don’t have to turn your ideas into a story, although that is of course very welcome!! – it’s merely a way of prompting a discussion on a fic idea you wouldn’t necessarily have thought of maybe, or help in poking a muse that is perhaps having an off-day.

It isn't easy...Collapse )

This is an open post for writers to discuss anything you’re currently working on/pondering/struggling with, share inspiration, offer encouragement and commiseration. Feel free to discuss anything you like, as long as it’s related to writing.

Today marks six years since the beginning of Lost! So, for a topic, how about talking about what aspects of the show first made you want to write, and how your interests changed throughout the years? Are you intrigued by different characters, did you start writing more complicated plots, what chances have you taken in writing Lost fanfic?

thequillstation has been on hiatus since the Luau, but now I think we've given everyone more than enough room to catch their breathes. The Jam Sessions will be held every two weeks!

+ What's on your mind writing-wise? How is the summer treating your muse?

+ As for a theme, how about telling us the woes and joys of the Luau?

This isn't a solicited discussion, but I posted this meta about Claire to my journal tonight and thought I would share:

why I write claire littleton the way I write her
or
the claire/jack[/sawyer] probability

claire littleton is...

Thanks to tellshannon815 and colourmayfade for the chance to host a discussion here at thequillstation, and on a topic that always plagues me during fanfic writing.

Here's starting with a sort of anecdote:

First and foremost, I have to thank tellshannon815 for inviting me to a lead discussion here again -- this time about yet another of my very favorite pairings, involving two of my very favorite characters: the almighty Jacob and his awesome brother, Smokey/Man In Black/Nameless Boy/Dr. Smoke/Esau. I’m going to mostly stick with Esau from here on out, though.

But before we begin, I offer you something of a personal disclaimer; a... statement of perspective, if you will. Bear with me.
